Our Mission
The mission of CBIO Initiatives for Global Health is to expand awareness about and implementation of the Census-Based, Impact-Oriented (CBIO) Approach to working with communities to assist them in their efforts to improve their health.
Why do we need CBIO?
CBIO is a pioneering methodology to help communities improve their health. Enormous health problems still exist that communities themselves can help address. Below are causes of readily preventable death and health impairment, and the number of people throughout the world affected by them.
Each year, around the world, there are…
stillbirths
newborn deaths
deaths of children aged 1–59 months
maternal deaths
deaths from tuberculosis
deaths from HIV/AIDS
deaths from malaria
children who are undernourished
women with an unmet need for family planning
people with readily treatable vision impairment
Undernutrition alone is linked to more than 250,000 child deaths from stunting and over one million from wasting annually, along with poorer cognitive development and lower earnings in adulthood. The number of people with vision impairment includes 826 million people with presbyopia that could be corrected with reading glasses and 94 million with operable cataracts.
Communities + Data = Lives Saved
There is much that communities can do to prevent these tragedies from occurring — both by working collaboratively with local health programs and also by local action in the community. CBIO is an approach that can help guide communities in these efforts.
